National Family Day is September 26th! And it will be a special day for us. We are officially a family of three now!
Earlier this month, Baby Girl was born, and we couldn't be more excited about this new chapter in life! All the sleepless nights, cuddles, and kisses are more than we could've asked for! She is perfect and we cannot wait to see hod God uses her.
Since it is National Family Day, I want to give us all some ways to celebrate our families.
Why should you celebrate National Family Day?
Well, how often do you purposefully celebrate your family. I'm not talking about birthdays and holidays. I'm talking intentional conversations with each family member where you tell them how and why you appreciate them. Where you spend time with your family not because you have to (dinnertime, car rides, etc.), but because you want to create lasting memories.
This is a time to check-in with your family. Social media doesn't always tell us the whole story. I want us to sit down and really find out how the person across the table is. It's healthy for us to connect with others, our family is our support system. Quality family time can help us make positive choices. Sharing time together lowers the risk of unresolved family conflict too.
Family isn't always the people in your household. To some, their family are the friends they interact with regularly. Whoever you consider family, get with them and tell them how much they mean to you.
Alright, so how can we purposefully celebrate our family?
Plan an outing - go to the beach, on a picnic, see a movie, or just spend the afternoon out. Get out of the house and spend some quality time together and get some fresh air.
Pick up your phone - if your family is out of town or in a different state, you can still connect with each other. Call them up, have a video conversation! Check in!
Put down your phone - on the other hand, if you are planning on spending time together in person, make sure you are fully invested and committed. Get off your phone and engage together!
Plan a game day - who doesn't love playing games? Whether its board games, puzzles, cards, or even a friendly game in the front yard, a little competition is healthy for quality family time.
Other ideas, should you need them!
But, what does the Bible say about this though?
Good question, because the Bible says a lot about family. God is our Father (Psalm 68:5), we are His children (1 John 3:1). God is the bridegroom, we are His bride (Revelation 19:7). We are co-heirs with Christ (Romans 8:17), meaning we are given the same privileges as Christ.
Some of the best ways to celebrate our family are by doing things for Christ, just as the Bible instructs.
Giving to those in need & praying regularly - Acts 10:2
Forgiving just as the Lord forgives us - Colossians 3:13
Bringing up our children in the Lord - Ephesians 6:4, Proverbs 22:6
Serving the Lord - Joshua 24:15
Kids, how can you celebrate your family?
Honoring your parents - Exodus 20:12, Deuteronomy 5:16
Obeying their teachings - Proverbs 6:20, Proverbs 1:8, Colossians 3:20, Ephesians 6:1-2
Bringing joy to our parents - Proverbs 15:20
I hope we all enjoy our time together with our families. Our time with family is special and important. Have a wonderful Family Day!
